Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign calls for support amidst rising US tensions

The Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign has called for UK government officials to recognise the sovereignty of the island nation and respect for international law following the humanitarian crisis imposed by US encroachment.

The situation between the two nations has rapidly deteriorated since the start of 2026 - following the seizure of Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, on January 3. This effectively cut off the oil supply of the small island nation - who was a close ally of Venezuela.

This was quickly followed by the US threatening other nations with tariffs if they shipped oil to Cuba. Effectively this has caused a humanitarian crisis on the small island - as the government scrambles to provide energy for hospitals, schools, transport, and other essential infrastructure.

In the face of recent events - including the continued illegal economic US economic and commercial blockade that's been imposed on the island for over 60 years - the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign has published an urgent call for peace and sovereignty, appealing to the British government, the EU, and the international community.

The Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign asks that institutions and citizens worldwide object to the threat of military force against the island nation - as well as reaffirm their respect for international law and the island’s independence.

This follows from the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign have announced their condemnation of the Executive order signed by US President Trump on January 29th. The order that imposes harsh economic penalties on any country that attempts to deliver oil to the island.

As the situation on the island deteriorates, the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign joins with organisations across the globe in supporting the people of Cuba at this difficult time.

Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign will continue with its programme of public work in solidarity with the people of Cuba - including regular vigils held for the people of Cuba in Glasgow City Centre.

The Cuba Solidarity Campaign also continues to raise funds in support of the Cuban people. So far they have raised over £250,000 to send much-needed medicine, equipment, and supplies to Cuba - and in collaboration with Jacob’s Well Appeal have sent over £1.3m worth of aid to the island.

Earlier this month, February 2, the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign organised an event held in Glasgow welcoming the grandson of Fidel Castro, Fidel Antonio Castro Smirnov, to speak on the legacy of his grandfather, modern conditions in Cuba, and the current difficulties they are facing with US imperialism.

The campaign will also be in dialogue with elected members at a local and national level - asking them to make a stand in support of Cuba.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign said: "We intend to continue raising awareness about humanitarian projects in Cuba as we always have.

"Most recently we have raised funds and awareness for the Cuba Vive appeal - which raises capital to purchase medical equipment, medicines, and supplies for hospitals supporting Cubans directly affected by the harsh economic sanctions imposed by Trump.

“It’s important that we recognise the importance of Cuba itself in the modern day. Despite all the difficulties they face, they still deliver first class education and health services, as well as international solidarity work that is second to none.

"It has never been more important to support the Cuban people. Cuba tells us that there is a way forward. There is no finer example that a better world is possible.”
